The study of medieval Indian economies (8th–18th centuries) provides valuable insights into socio-economic structures, agrarian systems, trade networks, artisanal production, and fiscal policies. Regional kingdoms, imperial administrations, and expanding trade routes, including the Silk Road and Indian Ocean networks, shaped this dynamic period.
The Delhi Sultanate (1206–1526) introduced centralized administration and the iqta land revenue system, supporting agrarian expansion, military finance, urban growth, and trade with Central Asia and the Middle East.
The Mughal Empire (1526–1857) strengthened fiscal administration through Todar Mal’s standardized revenue reforms, improving agricultural productivity and state control. Imperial patronage promoted textiles, crafts, and domestic and overseas trade, while political integration encouraged market expansion and monetary stability.
Examining these developments highlights the relationship between political authority and economic governance, revealing how state policies, social structures, and cultural factors shaped economic resilience, urbanization, and trade.
